Common causes for upper extremity pain

There are many reasons why you may be experiencing upper extremity pain.

The following are some of the most common causes of wrist, hand, and elbow pain:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The carpal tunnel is a narrow canal on your wrist that runs beneath your hand’s palm. It is in charge of protecting the median nerve and the tendons that allow you to bend your fingers.

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is under too much pressure. The carpal tunnel becomes irritated as a result of this pressure.

Numbness, stiffness, or discomfort in your fingers, hands, wrists, or forearms is possible.

West End Physiotherapy will treat your carpal tunnel syndrome without surgery in a safe and comfortable manner.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is referred to as an “overuse injury” because it occurs gradually over time. This condition occurs when tendons become inflamed, resulting in swelling and pain, particularly when the affected area is moved.

Golfer’s elbow

Medial (inside) epicondylitis, also known as “golfer’s elbow,” is an inflammation of the tendons surrounding the elbow. Tennis elbow is similar, but the pain is on the inside of the elbow. This injury is caused by the overuse of the muscles that flex your wrist and fingers.

Nerve injuries

There’s a good chance you’ll notice if one of the nerves that run through your elbow, forearm, wrist, or hand is injured! You might feel numbness, tingling, or a loss of temperature.

In cases of severe nerve injury, muscle function is disrupted, and paralysis can occur. Furthermore, nerve injuries are usually the result of overuse and are accompanied by edema. Swelling reduces the nerve’s ability to function properly by obstructing proper circulation.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

Cubital tunnel syndrome is another common form of nerve compression damage that can lead to elbow, wrist, and hand pain. It is caused by repetitive pressure on the ulnar nerve, which is located inside of the elbow and is known as your “funny bone.” When pressure is put on the cubital tunnel and surrounding nerves, it can cause pain, numbness, and tingling, especially to the ring and pinky fingers.

Tennis elbow

Tennis elbow is an inflammation of the tendons surrounding the elbow caused by lateral (outside) epicondylitis. It happens when you do repetitive tasks that require you to grip and extend your wrist. A few examples include holding a tennis racket, a paintbrush, or a hammer. Tenderness around the outside of your elbow will be severe, causing pain when gripping, lifting, or twisting your forearm.

Fracture

Falls commonly cause upper extremity fractures. This is due to the fact that the natural reaction is to try to catch yourself. The fingers, wrist, and elbow may become extremely stiff during the healing process. This can result in a decrease in strength and range of motion.

Sprain / Strain

Sprains and strains in the hand, wrist, and elbow are common. An unexpected overstretching of the tissues can cause sprains and strains. Overstretching can cause a tear, resulting in swelling, pain, and difficulty moving.

The list above may help you identify the source of your pain. It’s also possible that you have a completely different cause and/or experience!

In any case, make an appointment with West End Physiotherapy. Our physiotherapists in Vancouver, BC can identify the source of your pain and recommend treatment options.
