Shoulder Stability Exercise

Shoulder Stability Exercise

This is a great exercise for late stage shoulder rehab that promotes shoulder stability during exposure to unpredictable forces. This exercise works the small muscles around your shoulder joint, your arm muscles, and your core muscles. For this exercise, you hold a kettlebell upside down so the heavy part is balancing on top of the handle. This makes your muscles work extra hard to keep the weight from tipping over. By holding the weight still and turning your body, you teach your shoulder how to stay strong and steady even when you are moving around.

Safety Tips:

  • Squeeze the handle as tight as you can.
  • Keep your wrist straight so the kettlebell doesn’t flop over.
  • Freeze the weight in place. When you turn your body, try to keep the kettlebell in the exact same spot in the air—your body moves, but the weight shouldn’t.
  • Lock in your posture. Keep your core tight and your shoulders relaxed away from your ears so you don’t strain your back.

How to:

  1. Hold a kettlebell by the handle upside down directly in front of you with your shoulder bent to 90 degrees.
  2. Keep the kettlebell in the same place but turn your body to the side by stepping with your feet. Do your best to keep the kettlebell as steady as possible as you move.
  3. Return to the starting position and repeat as necessary.

*Never do an exercise that causes you pain*
